Case Studies
The names and other details of each child shown here have been changed for reasons of security
Sachen is a bright, mature boy, very hard working and keen to learn. Rejected by his father, his eyes had such a sad expression when he came to us. He now lives near the school where his adoptive parents have a tea shack. He enjoys playing ball games at playtime and loves the lego collected in the UK by a recent volunteer. It is very rewarding to see a smile light up his face.
Sharmila’s father is a labourer and the family live in one spotlessly kept room, with no running water. She is always well turned out for school and loves the English singing and action rhymes taught in the first year nursery class. She is making progress with her alphabet.
Mingma’s father is a carpenter but for some reason she almost always arrives late with no lunch box. The teachers see to it she gets some food, and we hope to introduce a daily milk ration. She is quiet, but works hard.
Rajen’s parents are subsistence farmers. There is no school where they live so he stays with an Aunt in Darjeeling. He works very hard at his reading and writing, and has good practical skills, making wonderful lego models.
Nema is one of the youngest and lacks confidence. His father has a low grade restaurant job and is very keen for him to learn so that he can have better opportunities than his parents. Our classroom assistant is able to give him extra time with his writing, and his teacher is always encourages him to join in activities.
